What is a Typical Working Day of a Doctor?

A surgeon’s schedule-at least a younger surgeon’s- is never set in stone. Every day is quite unpredictable. Broadly I would say my day depends on whether I have a full clinic session or a surgical session or a mixture of both. Also on some days I have to attend academic sessions.

I get up quite early at around 5:30-6am. Go for a jog. I read the newspaper quite religiously for half an hour, then take a shower and get ready. Depending on the day and when I have to be at work I either take breakfast at home or at work. If I have an academic session I have to be at the hospital by 7:30- 8am depending on the session otherwise I land up in my clinic at 8:30-9:00am.

My usual working day is a combination of the above three. It varies a lot depending on the combination. I have a working lunch somewhere in between at work (sometimes packed from home). My working day starts at 7:30 am and ends at 6-8 pm depending on the list. Then there are some emergencies I attend to sometimes. I also have to put the obnoxious Bangalore traffic to the mix. (I wish I owned a helicopter).

Home at 8 pm. Have Dinner. Say a cheerful «Hi» to my wife back from work. (not really in that order if you know what I mean!). Read any newspaper I had left out in the morning.(yeah I realize that this is a crazy obsession), Browse/answer emails, browse the net checking random things (yes even I do it,don’t judge me), Check Quora and spend about an hour (or two) reading and answering (this is a new addiction which don’t get me brownie points with my wife 🙁 ), watch an episode of some good TV series (not a regular habit, only sometimes). Read a book for an hour (medical or others)and finally force myself to sleep by 12am. I do this 5-6 days a week.

John Naylor, 24, is a successful businessman. Let’s follow him through a typical day.

The alarm clock goes off at 7:00 a. m. John jolts out of bed at the same time. The automatic coffee maker kicks on in the kitchen. He jumps in the shower, shaves, opens one of the half-dozen boxes of freshly laundered white shirts waiting on the shelf, finishes dressing, and pours a cup of coffee. He sits down to a piece of whole wheat toast while he nips through the Fleet Street Journal. It takes him about 15 minutes to wake up and get ready. His briefcase in one hand and gym bag in the other, he hops in the car, ready to start the day.

He clocks in at exactly 7:45 a. m. He takes a seat in front of the computer and prepares for hours of phone calls and meetings that occupy his mornings.

At noon John rashes to the health club where he strips off the grey suit and changes into his T-shirt, shorts and the latest in design running shoes for tennis. In an hour he is sitting in the club dining room where he has scheduled lunch with a potential client. They discuss business over sparkling water, pasta and a cup of coffee.

At 2:30 p. m. he is back at his office, eager for several more hours of frantic meetings and phone calls. At 6:00 p. m. John phones out for delivery of dinner to keep him going through the next two to three hours he’ll spend at his office.

John gets home at 10:00 p. m. just in time to sit down to a bowl of frozen yoghurt and a rerun of this season’s most popular drama series before turning in.

Kursk is an ancient Russian town. According to recent excavations, the Kursk fortress of the principality of Kiev was founded around 982-984, and was located in the area of the Red Square of the present city.

The official year of foundation of Kursk is 1032. This date is based on an ancient church document “The Life of Theodosius Pechersky”, created by the monk-chronicler Nestor in the 11th century. In this chronicle, Kursk is described as a large trade town with a significant number of residents.

Since the end of the 11th century, the fortress of Kursk was one of the most powerful outposts on the border of Kievan Rus. In 1185, Prince Vsevolod Kursky sent his troops against Polovtsy; this unsuccessful campaign of the Russian princes is described in the famous literary work “The Tale of Igor’s Campaign”.

In 1223, people from Kursk participated in the Battle of the Kalka River — the battle between the united Russian-Polovtsian army and the Mongolian army, the Mongols won a complete victory. This was the first Mongol invasion in Russia. In 1238, Kursk was completely destroyed by the Mongols.

The ancient land of Kursk is one of the spiritual centers of Orthodox Russia. The most renowned Russian monks and mystics Feodosiy Pechersky, Iosaf Belgorodsky, Serafim Sarovsky prayed here.

The City Day is celebrated in September. The climate is temperate continental. The average temperature in January is minus 6.4 degrees Celsius, in July — plus 21 degrees Celsius.

Kursk is a major industrial center: electrical engineering, instrument-making and machine tools, machinery and equipment for agriculture, food and processing industry, production of commercial equipment, chemical fibers, rubber products, furniture, pharmaceutical production. About 30% of the industrial potential of the Kursk region is concentrated in the city.

Kursk is one of the oldest cities of European Russia. There are special symbols of the region which mark it out from others. Have you ever heard of Kursk nightingales? Their singing includes pure sounds of flute, jugging, whistling and a lot of other variants. Russians even had experts of nightingale singing who could not only differentiate certain parts of the songs but also make out different nightingales’ “schools”. You may be surprised to learn that Turgenev once told his friend that our nightingales had their own thrills and parts and the most famous was the so called “cuckoo intermix”.

The nightingales’ thrills were highly valued even beyond the region. Shamov wrote that the bird made you either cry or go into raptures. According to Cherkasov’s researches, one nightingale cost more than 150 rubles. Just compare — you could buy two cows and two horses at the same price. There are plenty of stories connected with nightingales. The owner of a tavern in Moscow bought a nightingale for 1000 rubles and put the cage with the bird in the centre of the hall. People from the whole Moscow came to listen to the bird singing. The tavern keeper even started to train other birds charging 5 rubles per hour. Obviously, it paid off the risk of buying such an expensive bird.

No doubt, there is no place like home. I am very proud of the fact that there is no place where you can find such amazing birds like Kursk nightingales.

  1. What is the most significant symbols of Kursk?
  2. What famous people praised nightingales?
  3. Have you ever heard Kursk nightingales?

Kursk is a town with a rich historical past, which is connected with the history of the Russian state. Referring to the results of the archaeological excavations historians assume that Kursk was founded as a fortress of the Kiev Princedom in the reign of Vladimir Svyatoslavovich approximately in 982-983 on the bank of the Tuskar river, at the place where the small river Kur falls into it. It explains the name of the city – «Kursk-on-the-Tuskar»,

For the first time Kursk was mentioned in the Pechyor Paterikon one of the most famous written monuments of the ancient Church, compiled by the monk-chronicler Nestor in 1094. We can read some lines about the valour of Kursk dwellers in the world-famous old Russian poem «The Song of Igor’s Campain» written by an unknown author in a high-patriotic note.

Nowadays Kursk is a big industrial and cultural centre of the Russian Federation. Its population is more than 441 thousand people, the territory is about 18 thousand hectares. The town and its suburb are situated in the forest-steppe zone with a warm moderate-humid climate.

The main branches of industry in Kursk are metal-working, machine building, chemical and light industries. There are more than 90 enterprises in Kursk. A great number of joint-ventures have been registered and successfully work on the territory of Kursk.

There are 20 secondary professional schools, 14 colleges, 3 universities and an academy there. You can have a good opportunity to rest and widen your cultural outlook in Kursk at the regional drama theatre named after Pushkin, at the puppet theatre and the theatre of young spectators «Rovesnik», in the Houses and Palaces of Culture and the House of Knowledge, in the City palace for schoolchildren and in the cinemas, clubs, video salons, libraries, museums, picture gallery, picture pavilions, the planetarium and philharmonic society.

Let’s hope that thanks to industry and diligence of our townsmen Kursk will become more comfortable and beautiful. It is a tribute for our rich thousand-year-old history. It is necessary for living and future generation.
